In this section, you will learn about plenty of things including how a tattoo heals, what you should do after getting a tattoo, what you shouldn't do after getting a tattoo, how to sleep with a tattoo, and other useful information that can help you avoid inflicting any sort of damage to your skin an tattoo.

Take a quick read of these tattoo care basics below to start learning how to properly care for a tattoo.

How Does The Tattoo Healing Process Work?

Before anything else, allow us to discuss how the tattoo healing process works. We believe that this is an important factor that you should at least be aware about so that you’d have a basic grasp of what your body is going through after getting a tattoo.

Once you’re out of the tattoo shop, you will start undergoing three different stages of healing. Each stage can last for one to two weeks depending on your body’s ability to heal, skin type, and tattoo care regime.

During the first stage, which is roughly the first six days after getting a tattoo, you may be susceptible to swelling, oozing, as well as flaking. These occur because during the first week of healing, your skin is starting to form scabs over the tattooed area.

After the first stage, your skin will start to flake, which can then lead to excessive itching. This stage will continue for up to two weeks or until your skin’s dead layers have completely fallen off. This is probably the most frustrating stage since you should refrain from scratching the itch no matter what if you want to avoid damaging your tattoo.

The last stage is when your skin’s dead cells have fallen off and you're left with a semi-cloudy looking tattoo. This look can last for up to a month or until the deeper layers of your skin have healed itself up.

How To Take Care of A Tattoo?

We completely understand how frustrating caring for a new tattoo can be especially if it’s your first time getting a tattoo. But you see, once you know all about the proper tattoo care do’s and don’ts you’ll realize how easy it can be to care for a healing or an old tattoo.

Take note of these few tips we have below to ensure the vibrancy of your tattoo for the long run.

1. Always listen to your tattoo artist

Tattoo artists often give pieces of advice before their customers leave the shop. Just take note of the products they recommend as well as their personal instructions when it comes to removing bandages over your tattoo.

2. Don’t remove your tattoo’s cover

Upon leaving the shop, your tattoo should be covered with a piece of plastic or a bandage provided by your tattoo artist. Refrain from taking this cover off your tattoo since it makes sure that no dust or dirt gets into your tattoo while it’s still fresh and vulnerable to infection.

3. Wash your tattoo when you start removing the cover

Once your tattoo is free of the cover, you should try washing it first with the appropriate kind of soap. Try to go with mild soaps that don’t have fragrances. It’s also wise to go for soap with antibacterial properties to avoid infections.

4. Add some ointment or moisturizing cream to your tattoo

Tattoos should always be sufficiently moisturized if you want to avoid skin irritation like redness, swelling, and itching. Try to apply a small amount of petroleum jelly or your preferred ointment onto your tattoo and cover it up with cling film or leave it to dry, depending on what your artist advised.

5. Keep your tattoo away from water

A shower every now and then is alright, but a long soak in the tub or the pool is a huge no-no. For best results, try to avoid soaking your body in water for a long period of time for at least one month.

6. Avoid Tans

Direct exposure to sunlight can cause your tattoo to fade, especially when it’s not yet healed. Try to avoid going out on sunny days or at least try putting on some sunscreen on your tattoo to protect it from the sun’s harmful rays.

7. Never scratch your tattoo.

Itching is a normal part of the healing process. Depending on your skin type, you may experience extreme itching due to your body’s attempt to shed off the dead skin. During this stage, never ever try to pick or scratch your tattoo. It will only further irritate your skin, cause more scabbing, bleeding, and even minor damage to your tattoo.

What To Do After Getting A Tattoo?

So what exactly should you do after leaving the tattoo store? First thing’s first. Do not remove your tattoo cover. It serves as protection against anything that can cause infection on your tattoo.

Once you get home, you should wait at least two hours before you proceed to remove your tattoos cover. Make sure that your hands are clean before you attempt to remove your bandage and touch your tattoo.

After uncovering your tattoo, simply give it a quick wash using only the best soap for tattoo, water, and your hands. Don’t forget to gently pat it dry with a clean towel before covering it up again with the right material as suggested by your tattoo artist [1].

Watch this short video to learn more tips about tattoo aftercare.

How Long Should You Wait To Take A Shower After A Tattoo?

Some people say that you can take a shower as soon as you get home from the tattoo parlor while some people say that you can only take a shower one day after getting a tattoo [2]. Well, both are actually true. It basically depends on your skin type.

It’s practically safe to take a shower after you have uncovered your tattoo. Just make sure not to directly put it under running water and don’t take a hot shower.

How To Shower With New Tattoo?

Before anything else, remove your tattoos cover with clean hands. If there’s still a bit of ointment left on it from the tattoo parlor, just leave it and wash it off in the shower.

Showering with a new tattoo is no different than showering with a healed tattoo. The main difference is the product. Just use a mild soap or the best soap for tattoo healing and refrain from using hot water.

As you shower, try to avoid placing your tattoo directly under the shower. Instead, simply make the water run down your skin and over your tattoo.

When it comes to drying your skin, avoid letting it air dry as your tattoo should be kept dry as soon as possible. The best way to dry a new tattoo is by gently patting it dry with a clean towel [3].

After your shower, you may then proceed to adding some ointment to your tattoo and covering it up with cling wrap to keep dust and dirt away from your skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Learned a lot from the section above? Well, if you still have some space to learn a little bit more about proper tattoo care, we encourage you to take a quick look at these FAQs.

When Can You Get A Tattoo?

When it comes to age, there hasn’t been any studies yet saying how old you must be to get skin that’s perfect for a tattoo. However, you must refrain from getting a tattoo if you suffer from skin conditions, rashes, sunburns, dry skin or any other abnormal skin condition that could only cause your tattoo to be susceptible to infection and fading.

Can You Drink After Getting A Tattoo?

Plenty of people experience seeing other people get tattooed while they’re drunk, which leads to the common misconception that it’s alright to drink before, during, or after getting a tattoo.

Though this is practically a harmless thing, we highly suggest you avoid drinking on, before, or after getting a tattoo because alcohol causes your blood to thin out. This means your skin will bleed more and will cause the tattoo pigments in your skin to get drawn out. As a result, you may experience a longer time getting your tattoo finished or an entirely faded tattoo [4].

What Kind Of Ointment Do You Put On Tattoos?

When it comes to adding ointments to your tattoos, you should look for something that can aid the overall healing process of your skin. We highly recommend using ointments like Aquaphor, A+D ointment, and Bacitracin. These are some of the most used ointments when it comes to tattoo care.

Other kinds of products you may try using are petroleum jelly and vaseline. Just keep in mind that all you have to do is keep your tattoo clean and bacteria free as well as sufficiently moisturized for less itching.

Is Aquaphor Good For Tattoos?

Aquaphor is a great product that you can use daily to achieve faster tattoo healing times. It works well on dry and sensitive skin and it keeps the quality of your tattoo last longer when used even after healing.

How To Sleep With A New Tattoo?

Take note that you would only have to adjust your sleeping position and sleeping routine for the first two stages of the tattoo healing process. For the first two to three weeks after getting a tattoo, make sure that your tattoo is completely dry before you go to bed.

We also suggest that you cover up your tattoo with some cling wrap to avoid getting the fibers in your bed linens on your skin [5].

If your tattoo doesn’t sting that much, you can rest easy knowing that there’s no harm in sleeping on your tattoo. Otherwise, you should try to keep your tattoo facing the ceiling to keep it away from any abstraction that can cause you discomfort.

I love the Hibiclens Antiseptic soap though it is not fragrant because my skin is quite sensitive. No pain, no itching, no rashes! 5-star quality!

I’m so surprised! I used to get sea salt/H2Ocean spray for my piercings, but it ran out in 2 months. Recently I’m using the provon medicated, and it lasts for a year. I think I should use it as a hand wash too xD

The Proven Medicated contains 4 oz with the very competitive price, so it is the perfect choice if you’re shopping with a budget. It also works wonders as hand wash; your hands will be very soft after use.

The proven lotion soap is wonderful. I’ve been using it when my tattoo got infected, and it worked wonders. I also use it to treat the infection on my pet. He seems to love it!

This article is very useful! I have so dry skin that I can’t find a suitable soap for my tattoo. But finally, I find the H2Ocean Blue Green here. It looks promising to take care of my lovely tattoos.

Having dry skin is not so good, but fortunately you got H2Ocean. It is the most recommended soap for treating the infection on the dry and sensitive skin. We hope that you’ll love it!
